Raymondskill Falls

Cool, shady glen at Raymondskill Falls in Pike County, Pennsylvania. Part of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (see Delaware Water Gap), the multi-tiered Raymondskill Falls is the tallest waterall in the state; only four feet shorter than Niagara (they say).

U Myint Maung

U Myint Maung running compass in one of the initial training transects during the Hukaung Valley Rattan Survey (see Hukaung Valley Rattan Survey).  Very focused, poised, and efficient at keeping the transect  line straight. U Myint Maung was the Warden of the Hukaung Valley Tiger Reserve (as it was called in those days) during the 2005 rattan survey. Warden of one of the largest protected areas in the world, capable compassman, and a truly great guy (scroll down to the end of the January 23, 2005 journal entry).

Happy Birthday, Wendell Berry

Wendell Berry - poet, environmental activist, cultural critic, and farmer - celebrated his 80th birthday today. Truly a remarkable man.

“We have lived our lives by the assumption that what was good for us would be good for the world. We have been wrong. We must change our lives so that it will be possible to live by the contrary assumption, that what is good for the world will be good for us. And that requires that we make the effort to know the world and learn what is good for it.”

- The Long-Legged House (1969)

Sarah Sze

Had a lovely visit to the Bronx Museum of the Arts this weekend. Lot of great pieces, but perhaps my favorite was the sculpture by Sarah Sze, entitled "Triple Point (Planetarium)". From the signage: "Sarah Sze's work attempts to navigate and model the ceaseless proliferation of information and objects in contemporary life." This a very complicated piece, with lights, and fans, and stools, and tables, bamboo spheres, strings, clips, cut paper, and streamers. [NOTE: Sze received a MacArthur Fellows Award in 2002].

Hey Jude

Meant to post this on Wednesday. "Hey Jude" by the Beatles, generally agreed to be one of the greatest songs of all times, was recorded on July 30, 1968, i.e. 46 years ago. Do yourself a favor. Take 7:03 minutes out of your Friday, go here, and turn up the volume. Take a sad song and make it better.
