Hoban Cards specializes in making beautifully designed letterpress printed calling cards, business cards, and stationery. Minimal, affordable letterpress printing. This small print shop in the Pacific Northwest does fantastic work. They made my personal card – which I love, and if you are looking for this type of thing, I am sure that they could print something for you that you would also love.

Deep Ecology for the 21st Century is a 488 page compendium about the basic tenets and historical roots of deep ecology, wilderness, conservation biology, ecofeminism, and ecological approaches to being in the world. Wonderful writings by Arne Ness, George Sessions, Gary Snyder, Jack Turner, Dave Foreman, and Thomas Berry. All of my favorites. I am actually reading this book for the second time. Makes a nice companion to some of the readings highlighted here (and in four subsequent posts). [NOTE: Thomas Berry's chapter reflects on how to be a viable human. We could all use a little work in this area].

Since July I have been commuting to work on two wheels. After 22 years without a motorcycle in my life (kids, career, life, and stuff), I made one of my dreams come true and bought a Harley-Davidson. Its an XG 750 and going to work has gotten a lot more fun. Performs well in rush-hour traffic, gets 55 miles per gallon, and you can park it anywhere (shown above outside my office). Really nice bike.
[NOTE: It seems I may have started blogging again on this site. Maybe related somehow to the book or the bike? We'll see how this goes...]

Woke up this morning and sat two periods of zazen at EHZC. On the way to work, the thought arose that 1,860 posts and over seven years was probably a sufficient investment in blogging. Use the time for other stuff, e.g. books, and community forestry, and more zazen. Bows of gratitude to everyone who visited these pages over the past years. Later. Worker cleans and polishes one of the numerous statues of Buddha lining the corridors of Ananda Temple in Bagan. This impressive temple, frequently referred to as the "Westminister Abbey of Burma", is named after the Venerable Ananda, the Buddha's first cousin and personal assistant (see Ananda).

Yeah, I know that it's 7:21 minutes long, but, trust me, I guarantee that you will be engaged and will learn something (probably many things) about Planet Earth. And will be tempted to watch a couple of their other videos offered here. [NOTE: Kurzgesagt is German for "in a nutshell"].

On my upcoming trip to Myanmar (with son, Luke), after finishing up in Nam Sabi (see Nam Sabi VMA and VMA Inventory) and then spending a few days in Mandalay, we will go visit Bagan (shown above). Thousands of stupas and pagodas stretching back from the Ayeyarwady River over 40 square kilometers. Yippeee!!

Insights from Robert Bringhurst (see The Elements of Typographic Style) noted while reading The Tree of Meaning: Language, Mind, and Ecology on the train to work this morning:
"I beg to remind you, however, that what you find on the font of a photosetting machine is the photographic image of a letter, and what you set with photosetting equipment is not in truth a letter but a picture of a letter. More precisely: a picture of a drawing of a letter. What you find on a digital font is likewise not a letter but a Bézier or cubic-spline description of a letter. What you set with your computer and print with a laser printer is a digital simulation of a letter. What you find in a California job case (see above) is also not a letter but a sort, which is a sculpture of a letter. What you print with a Vandercook or an Albion is the imprint of a sculpture of a letter. Where is the letter itself? This is the mind-body problem of the philosophers writ small."
