Seated Buddha

This lovely statue of Shakyamuni Buddha is near the entrance of the main pagoda in Myitkyina, the capital city of Kachin State, Myanmar (see Buddhas and Bodhisattvas). Beautifully rendered. The face and lowered gaze are exquisite. And I especially like the juxtaposition of the feet in the lotus position (perfectly horizontal) and the hands in the "cosmic" mudra (left on top of right). [NOTE: I remember I spent a long time gazing at this statue as the Myitkyina traffic whizzed by on the street outside].

We are what we think.
All that we are arises with our thoughts.
With our thoughts we make the world.
Speak or act with an impure mind
And trouble will follow you
As the wheel follows the ox that draws the cart.

We are what we think.
All that we are arises with our thoughts.
With our thoughts we make the world.
Speak or act with a pure mind
And happiness will follow you
As your shadow, unshakable
.
