Drove to Hamden, Connecticut last Friday to visit Tim Moran Woodwinds, a speciality instrument shop featuring vintage saxophones, flutes, clarinets, and oboes and a wonderful repair studio. What a great place. Visited the shop to pick up a re-furbished clarinet that we had ordered for Amy. As shown above, a beautiful K-Series Evette Schaeffer, made by Buffet in France in the early 1950's. The body of the clarinet is crafted from grenadilla (Dalbergia melanoxylon Guill. & Perr.) wood and the whole instrument was lovingly restored by Mr. Moran who clearly cares a lot about woodwinds. [NOTE: Made me reflect on a lot of the issues raised in Crawford's Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry Into the Value of Work (see Nice Job). Very much enjoyed meeting Mr. Moran and visiting his shop. By appointment, only].
