Sea ice forming in the Antarctic releases salty brine. The frigid salt water rapidly sinks, ice forms around it, and an enormous salty icicle, or "brinicle", is created that stretches all the way down to the ocean floor. Any sea life in its path is frozen. I never knew about this. David Attenborough narrates this gorgeous clip from BBC Nature. "Winter is reaching down from the cold world above..."
